An inspiring paleo cookbook from a 17-year-old writer, blogger, and photographer who lost over 100 pounds going paleo and learning to cook.

It’s not every day you meet someone who blows you away with their accomplishments… who is one-third your age. That’s right. The author of the stunning The Slim Palate Paleo Cookbook could be my grandchild. I had the pleasure of meeting Josh Weissman at the Take Back Your Health conference in DC, where he was a speaker. He was friendly and delightful, so self-possessed. I bought a copy of his book promising to review it and include it in a giveaway.

And then I started reading it. Truly, if I didn’t tell you his age, this book could be written by a paleo chef in his 30s or more. I don’t know how kids are turning out this great these days… it gives me hope for the future. Now, on to the book.

Layout and design:

The book is absolutely beautiful. Beautiful cover, beautiful paper, beautiful layout. It’s organized with an introduction, and two sections about ingredients. Weissman’s voice comes through strongly as he expresses his love and appreciation for the farmers he has befriended in his quest for high quality, humanely raised animals. Recipe chapters include breakfast, poultry, meat, seafood, soups and stews, vegetables, desserts and sweets, sauces dressing and dips. Each section begins with a lovely black and white pen-and-ink-style illustration.

Every recipe features a stunning full-color, full-page photograph. Not only did the author shoot every photograph, he styled them as well. It’s insane.

Recipes include pancakes with almond butter and blackberry sauce, fragrant spatchcocked roasted chicken, crispy duck breasts with cherry-port sauce, slow-roasted lamb shoulder with parsley sauce, Mediterranean halibut with citrus vinaigrette and black olives, asparagus soup with crispy shallots, vinaigrette-marinated squash noodles, cauliflower tortillas, lemon poppy seed loaf, salted dark chocolate almond butter fudge, and ginger-almond dressing. All recipes are gluten-free, grain-free, legume-free. Most are dairy-free.

What I liked about the book:

Just inspiring on so many levels. I would be proud if this were my book. I’m sorta proud of him in a parental way and I’ve only met him briefly. I think other kids and teens, especially those with weight issues, would be inspired by this book.

I wasn’t so keen on:

Recipes were not coded for special diets (although as noted they are gluten-, grain-, and legume-free); nutritional analysis is not provided, which would be helpful for low-sodium eaters.

Recommended for:

paleo, Whole30, celiac, gluten-free eaters; kids and teens struggling with weight issues; whole foods and low-carb eaters. Okay for migraine and low-sodium diets if you know how to adapt recipes.

Not recommended for:

vegan or vegetarian diets

A note about my cookbook reviews: In the past, I tested at least three recipes from each book, took photos, and described my experience. Due to my dietary limitations (extremely-low-sodium for my Meniere’s Disease and trigger-free foods for migraine relief), it is no longer possible for me to test the recipes without adapting them.
