Recipe Renovator reviews: Gluten-Free & Vegan for the Whole Family by Jennifer Katzinger

90 recipes that are egg-free, dairy-free, wheat-free, gluten-free, and primarily soy-free

I have reviewed several books from Pacific Northwest publisher Sasquatch Books, including two by this author, so I generally say yes when they ask to send me another. Gluten-Free & Vegan for the Whole Family: Nutritious Plant-Based Meals and Snacks Everyone Will Love is equally beautifully designed and produced.

Layout and design:

These chapters follow an introduction: staples, breakfast, lunch, snack foods, soups, vegetables & salads, dinners, sweet & treats. The book has a beautiful, compact layout (the same as her other two books), very user-friendly.

Full-color, full-page photographs by Charity Burggraaf appear every 3-4 pages, bringing the recipes to life in gorgeous detail.

Recipes:

Recipes include quinoa flatbread, walnut almond milk, blueberry-parsley smoothie, banana muffins, red bean burgers, lentil caviar on root vegetable rounds, nut butter energy bars, kale chips, creamy broccoli soup, Italian wedding soup, pakoras, spinach salad, cassoulet, delicata squash and pesto-dressed white beans with sun-dried tomatoes, carrot cake, and dark chocolate cake with dark chocolate ganache frosting.

What I liked about the book:

I love that they include the recipe list right up front. Great nutrition information before each recipe, plus helpful callouts for prep and presentation. Good variety of recipes and they look like they taste amazing.

I wasn’t so keen on:

Recipes were not coded for special diet restrictions and nutritional analysis is not provided, which would be helpful for people likely to buy this book. I find it hard to imagine kids who currently eat nuggets eating much of this food, and wonder how extensively the recipes were tested by kids and families.

Recommended for:

vegan, vegetarian, celiac, gluten-free diets, families who want to get more plants into their meals

Not recommended for:

Migraine, paleo, or low-sodium diets

A note about my cookbook reviews: In the past, I tested at least three recipes from each book, took photos, and described my experience. Due to my dietary limitations (extremely-low-sodium for my Meniere’s Disease and trigger-free foods for migraine relief), it is no longer possible for me to test the recipes and do them justice.

Required FTC disclosure: I received one copy of this book from the publisher for the giveaway on February 25th, 2016.
