Cookbook review | Near and Far by Heidi Swanson | Recipe Renovator

Another beautiful cookbook from 101 Cookbooks author Heidi Swanson

Fans of Heidi Swanson will not be disappointed by her new cookbook Near & Far: Recipes Inspired by Home and Travel, which has her signature style infused throughout, from the rich-yet-subtle embossed cover to the travel photographs and stories in addition to the vegetarian recipes.

Layout and design:

The book is organized into Near (San Francisco), En Route (a few travel-friendly recipes), and Far (Morocco, Japan, Italy, France, India), and Accompaniments. It perfectly reflects Swanson’s style of photography, which also feels like a trip inside an Anthropologie store. Beautiful font choices make the book user-friendly, and heavy matte paper allows for taking notes if you like to do so. Each section starts with a recipe list and also a pantry list of items you’ll likely need for the recipe in that section.

Recipes:

Recipes include whole wheat waffles, chive dumplings, harira, carrot and sake salad, brown butter tortelli, tartine au fromage blanc, saag paneer, and cultured honey butter.

What I liked about the book:

A rich combination of travel book and cookbook. Introduces new flavors. Warm inviting writing. Inventive recipes and flavor combinations.

I wasn’t so keen on:

Recipes were not coded for special diets; nutritional analysis is not provided, which would be helpful for low-sodium eaters.

Recommended for:

vegetarians (most recipes include dairy or eggs), people who love to travel

Not recommended for:

Migraine, vegan, paleo, celiac/gluten-free, dairy-free, or low-sodium diets

A note about my cookbook reviews: In the past, I tested at least three recipes from each book, took photos, and described my experience. Due to my dietary limitations (extremely-low-sodium for my Meniere’s Disease and trigger-free foods for migraine relief), it is no longer possible for me to test the recipes and do them justice.

Required FTC disclosure: I received one copy of this book from the publisher for the giveaway on October 29th, 2015.
